Fire guts accounts section of Ebonyi Govt House

Dr Kenneth Ugbala, Senior Special Assistant to Gov David Umahi on Internal Security, told NAN that it took the combined efforts of workers and the State Fire Service to put out the fire.

"An upholstery and cottons within the section were completely burnt and we would ascertain the true extent of damage when the fire service concludes its task,'' he said.

"The shouts for help attracted workers who used improvised items such as water and detergent to put out the fire before the arrival of firemen," she said.

3 children abandoned while their parents are in jail

Three Kids of the same parents have been abandoned in Mushin as their parents have been arrested and remanded in prison custody in Lagos. Their parents, Taofik Aremu and his wife, Latifat, were arraigned before a Lagos Task Force and Magistrate court for committing different offences and have been remanded in prison for the past five weeks.

While Taofik was remanded at a prison in Badagry, his wife is cooling her head at Kirikiri prison. Their three Kids, four – year – old kudirick and the twins Taye and Kehinde who are two years of age, are left to their fate at 13 Agoro street in Mushin where their reside.

We gathered that the ordeals of the embattled parents started when Mr Aremu went to work and was arrested by the Lagos State Task Force. He was subsequently arraigned and remanded in prison.

His wife, Lafifat had disagreement with their landlady who dragged her to the Police at Olosan division in Mushin over rent. She was charged before Ogba Magistrate court where she was granted bail but there was nobody to stand as her sureties because of money .

Our correspondent gathered that the landlady, Iyabola Oladokun asked her to move out from her rented apartment despite having an existing one year rent. They had exchange of words, the landlady went to the police station where she reported that she was insulted by Latifat. The police arrested her and charged her to court.

At the court, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding Magistrate granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in the like sum. She was remanded in the custody pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.

When the matter came up on Thursday, it was further adjourned till 15 April 2017. At the court, their neighbours brought those kids for her to take to them prison, but she was not allowed to do so. She wept before she was taken back to the custody.

UK deports 23 Nigerians over immigration offences

The United Kingdom Government on Friday deported 23 Nigerians for various immigration offences in the country.

The all male deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at about 6 am in a chartered aircraft.

The deportees were received by officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the Police.

FG Says Abuja Airport 57 Percent Complete

The Federal Government has again reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the re-opening of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on April 19, 2017.

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said this on Thursday during an interview with reporters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He made the assertion after inspecting the progress of work at the facility, alongside the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed.

Mr Sirika said the rehabilitation is 57 per cent complete, reassuring air travellers that the airport will be re-opened with a new runway and a new terminal building on the scheduled date.

The assertion follows the disapproval of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation over the pace of work at the airport.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Honourable Nkiru Onyejeocha, warned the contractors to keep to the stated date of completion, noting that the Committee will not tolerate request for extension of time.

Speaking earlier at a meeting in Lagos State, Mr Sirika said he will resign if the airport is not opened by April 19.

He noted that the level of work on the Abuja runway in the past three weeks shows that the re-opening will be on schedule.

Senate Approves Electronic Voting For Elections

The Nigerian Senate has approved the use of electronic voting in future elections and election results to be electronically transmitted in an encrypted and secured manner to collation centers, in order to prevent hacking.

"In the event of the death of a candidate during elections, before the announcement of the result, that the commission (INEC), shall suspend election for a period of 21 days and give the opportunity to the party whose candidate had died; if the party has interest that is, to continue with the election.

The reason for stating this according to him, was because there were several issues in which some persons had said that "the running mate should take over, some are saying that the runner up in the primary election should be considered.

China Bans Muslims Wearing 'Abnormal' Beards or Veils

China has announced that it is implementing new measures including a ban on 'abnormal' beards in its heavily Muslim region of Xinjiang. Veils have also been banned in public places along with refusing to watch or listen to state media, as part of the new 'Regulations on Extremisation of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.'

A number of bans on 'extremist behaviour' have been previously introduced in the province home to 10 million Muslims. China claims that the legal, cultural and religious rights of Muslims in Xinjiang are fully protected.

However many Muslim Uighur people resent increasing restrictions on their culture and religion and complain they are denied economic opportunities amid an influx of Han Chinese into the province.

Former Power Rangers star Ricardo Medina Jr. has been sentenced to six years in prison for killing his roommate Joshua Sutter with a sword two years ago. The 38-year-old actor was sentenced on Thursday (March 30) in a courtroom in Lancaster, Calif.

Popular Female gospel singer, Matlakala Ramathoka, is dead

Matlakala Ramathoka, a South African gospel singer of the Masole a Tumelo and the Comforters groups, has passed on at the age of 43.

 

The singer died reportedly after complaining of chest pains at Akasia Private Hospital, north of Tshwane, on Sunday.

 

The singer from Mathibestad, in North West, was well-known for songs such as Kgalemela Lefatshe and Dintwa Ditekising.

 

Before her untimely death, she had finished recording an album titled Emanuel, which was released on Friday, reports Daily Sun.

 

Her friend and fellow gospel musician, Winnie Mashaba, took to Instagram to share a touching message about her late friend.

“Yesterday when I received another sad news that someone I always respected Sesi Selinah Matlakala Ramathoka is no longer with us, then I made the following choices;

“I chose to live my life to the fullest without any regrets.

“I chose to forgive, forget and appreciate every little / big opportunity that comes my way.

Photos: EFCC arraigns serving House of Representatives member for certificate forgery

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today arraigned a serving member of the House of Representatives, Nse Bassey Ekpenyong before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on a 9-count charge of forgery and alteration of documents.


Ekpenyong, representing Oron Federal Constituency in Akwa- Ibom State, was alleged to have forged an Abia State Polytechnic's Ordinary National Diploma Certificate and uttered a December 1999's West African Examination School Certificate, WASSCE and thereby committed perjury before an Electoral Tribunal where he claimed that the certificates were genuine.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him. In view of his plea, prosecution counsels Ahmed I. Arogha and S. Hussaini asked for a trial date and accelerated hearing of the matter.  However, counsel to the defendant, Emmanuel Isangidoho, told the court that he had filed an application for bail for his client and urged the court to admit him to bail.

Justice Ojukwu granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10, 000,000.00 (Ten million Naira) with one surety in like sum. The surety must depose to an affidavit of means, provide 2 recent passports photograph and 3 years tax clearance certificate. The surety should write an undertaken to produce the defendant throughout the trial and all the documents of the surety must be verified by the Registrar.

Justice Ojukwu also ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail.

The case has been adjourned to 12, 26 April, and 3, 4 May, 2017 for trial

Acid attack survivor disfigured by ex-lover shares her story to warn ladies in abusive relationships (Photos)

After enduring almost 10 years of abuse, Shondel Williamson, 26, summoned enough courage to walk away from the toxic relationship, taking her two young children with her.
Just when she was starting to rebuild her life, working and caring for her two boys, her life changed tragically within a twinkle of an eye. 

Her former lover and father of her children, Alfred De Younge attacked her with acid, burning away her nose, eyes and upper body.


According to Capitol News, the perpetrator disguised himself as a woman and gained access to her friend's house in Amsterdam Berbice, Guyana, where she was staying and poured the acid on her while screaming, "If I cant have you, no one else can"

Williamson was hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital for almost nine weeks fighting to save her sight. Her face is badly disfigured and the extent of her injuries are so severe that she is not able to receive care in Guyana. Therefore she must travel overseas for treatment to reconstruct her face and save her sight.

Fortunately, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) has been able to secure treatment services for her at a top US hospital, where she will receive state of the art treatment, from some of the best doctors in the field.
Despite her challenges, she intends on becoming an advocate for domestic violence and wants both women and men in abusive relationship to walk away before it is too late.
