Manchester Bombing: Condolences Pour in as Death Toll Rises...See Details
The number of people killed in the Manchester Bombing has continued to increase as death toll continues to rise.
The death toll in the lone wolf bombing at the Manchester Arena has increased to 22, with 59 reported injured. Among the victims were children.
The death toll was initially put at 19 by Greater Manchester Police.
The suicide bomber struck Monday night as thousands of fans streamed out of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande.
Prime Minister Theresa May called an emergency meeting with intelligence chiefs on the deadliest militant assault in Britain since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London’s transport system in July 2005.
Witnesses related the horror of the blast which prompted a stampede just as the concert ended at Europe’s largest indoor arena.
“We ran and people were screaming around us and pushing on the stairs to go outside and people were falling down, girls were crying, and we saw these women being treated by paramedics having open wounds on their legs … it was just chaos,” said Sebastian Diaz, 19.
“It was literally just a minute after it ended, the lights came on and the bomb went off,” Diaz said.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the attack as the work of “evil losers”. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it “will only strengthen our resolve to…work together with our British friends against those who plan and carry out such inhumane deeds.”
Police said the attacker detonated the explosives shortly after 10:33 pm at Manchester Arena, which has the capacity to hold 21,000 people. Children were among the dead, police said.
“We believe, at this stage, the attack last night was conducted by one man,” Manchester Chief Constable Ian Hopkins told reporters. “The priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network.
He declined to answer questions on the bomber’s identity.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said more police had been ordered onto the streets of the British capital. London’s Victoria coach station was briefly closed after discovery of a suspect package.
A source with knowledge of the situation said the bomber’s explosives were packed with metal and bolts. At least 19 of those wounded were in a critical condition, the source said.
A video posted on Twitter showed fans, many of them young, screaming and running from the venue. Dozens of parents frantically searched for their children, posting photos and pleading for information on social media.
“We were making our way out and when we were right by the door there was a massive explosion and everybody was screaming,” concert-goer Catherine Macfarlane told Reuters.
“It was a huge explosion – you could feel it in your chest.”
Ariana Grande, 23, whose concerts attract a very large proportion of young women and girls, said on Twitter: “broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don’t have words.”
Other celebrities also tweeted condolences including John Legend: “Sending love to the U.K., @ArianaGrande and all of her supporters who were caught up in this awful attack. Heartbreaking.”
And Nicki Minaj says:
Prime Minister May, who faces an election in two-and-a-half weeks, said her thoughts were with the victims and their families. She and Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, agreed to suspend campaigning ahead of the June 8 election.
“We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack,” May said in a statement.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but U.S. officials drew parallels to the coordinated attacks in November 2015 by Islamist militants on the Bataclan concert hall and other sites in Paris, which claimed about 130 lives.
Governor Ortom Sings into Law Five-year Jail Term for Cattle Rearers
Samuel Ortom
Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Monday signed into law the Anti-Open Grazing and Anti- Kidnapping, Abduction, Cultism and Terrorism bills. Ortom said at the ceremony in Makurdi that the anti-grazing law would put to an end to incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers.
The governor lamented the killings and destruction of property in clashes involving farmers and herdsmen over the years, and promised to promote ranching since it had proved to be the best way of rearing livestock globally.
“Now that the bill has been signed into law, the law will take its course on anyone that goes against it,” he said. He warned that violators would serve a jail term of five years or a fine option of N1 million, or both.

28 Year Old Student Impregnated By Her Lecturer Cries Out (Details/Photos)
Punch reported that a lecturer at the Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese Ijebu, Dr Oluseyi Adu, and a Dental Nursing student, Mosunmola, are embroiled in a row over who is responsible for the pregnancy that the nursing student is carrying.
Mosunmola, who is nine months pregnant, alleged that Adu was responsible for the child in her womb, adding that they had sex in a hotel sometime in August, 2016. She said the lecturer beat her up last month when she confronted him at the college for avoiding her, adding that the case was already at the Ilese Police Station.
Mosunmola told Punch correspondent that she underwent a three-year course at the college, adding that several lecturers had asked her out before Adu, but she refused. She said,
“Dr Adu is the Oral Health Coordinator for the college. During my three years study, he taught me two courses each semester. I have never failed his course.
“When I got to second semester, 300 level, he awarded me 38 in one of his courses. I went to his office in August 2016 to know why I failed the course. I needed to pass all my courses to be able to go for my board exam.
“He asked me if I thought I could just come to the school and go like that. He said if I dated him, he would waive the course. He said he didn’t approach me in 100 level because another lecturer was interested in dating me.
“The lecturer he mentioned told me in 100 level that it was either I paid him money or used my body to pass his course. Because I didn’t agree, I failed his course. I didn’t pass it until I got to 300 level.
“I told Adu that I would date him, but I didn’t want to have any problem, and he assured me that there would be no regret.”
The victim said the lecturer took her to the office of the Head of Department and after some discussions, it was agreed that she could sit for the board exam.
After the board exam at POGIL College of Health Technology, Oke-Eri, Ijebu Ode, on August 21, Adu, who was among those on the panel, was said to have given Mosunmola some of his practical instruments and a laptop for safekeeping.
However, Mosunmola said when the school bus arrived to take the students back to the school, she forgot to give the practical instruments back to the lecturer. She said Adu later called and asked her to bring the instruments to a hotel where he lodged.
“I was preparing to leave when he called me back that I would be sleeping over with him.
“I met him with another lecturer in my department. I observed that the lecturer also had a female student with him. From the hotel, we went to different places before we finally lodged in another hotel along Ilese Road. While I was with Adu in a room, my other classmate passed the night with the second lecturer in another room.
“We had three rounds of sex. He didn’t release on time. He used two condoms for the first two rounds. The third round was, however, flesh-to-flesh. That was when he ejaculated inside me,” she explained.
She said the lecturer dropped her off at home and they continued their relationship, until she stopped seeing her menstruation a few weeks later. The Ogun State indigene said she became worried after she started vomiting, adding that she took a pregnancy test, which was positive.
She said when Adu heard the news, he reluctantly accepted responsibility, but allegedly gave her a drug, Eprostol, to abort the pregnancy. She said,
“I refused to take the drug because the prescription was not from a medical doctor. He came down to my place to persuade me to take the drug, but I still refused. He asked me what I wanted and I told him that I needed to change my accommodation because the pregnancy was a shameful thing for me. He told me not to worry, that he would handle it. After that, we had sex.
“When he left that day, I could not find my phone again. By the time I got another phone and called him, he started acting funny. Sometime, he would just laugh at me.”
Punch learnt that several people had attempted to mediate in the situation without any success. Mosunmola said attempts by Adu’s HOD, dean, and provost to mediate were rebuffed by the lecturer.
The victim said she later approached the Human Rights Office of the Ogun State Ministry of Justice at Ijebu-Ode, where a lawyer, one Kolade, called the parties for a meeting.
Adu was reported to have agreed to pay N5,000 feeding allowance per month, in addition to paying N7,000 for ante-natal registration. After paying the allowance for two months, Adu reportedly stopped.
The parties reportedly held another meeting in March at the human rights office to review the agreement. Conflict was said to have broken out among the parties when Mosunmola presented a list of things required for her delivery, which she valued at N50,000.
Adu was said to have insisted on paying N30,000, which the 28-year-old refused.
“I didn’t have any accommodation and I couldn’t buy any of the drugs the doctors prescribed for me. I told him I would only manage the N50,000. He left in annoyance.
“Since March, the lawyer didn’t call us back and Adu refused to pay the N5,000 he used to give me every month. I called the lawyer late March and asked him to help me get the N30,000, but the lawyer said I should not call him again,” she said.
After reporting the lecturer to the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Health, where Adu also worked, without any result, Mosunmola said she became desperate and went to the college on April 13 when she knew Adu would be taking a class.
She said while pleading with him for money for her medical expenses, the lecturer assaulted her. She said some people intervened and she reported a case of assault to the police at the Ilese division, Ijebu Ode.
“I am now in my 38 weeks and anytime soon, I will have my child. I am an orphan and I don’t have any of my baby items ready. I am begging Nigerians to come to my rescue. I know I have made a mistake, but I need a second chance at life. I don’t have anywhere to go. It is a church that is accommodating me now,” she said.

Man Rapes & Impregnates 13-year old Girl In Aba
A welder identified as Ugochukwu Oleka, has defiled and impregnated a 13-year-old Primary 6 pupil in Aba, Abia State.
Oleka, who works in Azikiwe Asa in Aba, said he only had a carnal knowledge of the girl on one occasion, blamed the devil for his action.
However, the victim told Southern City News that the suspect had slept with her for more than seven times and also said Oleka promised to be giving her money to buy biscuits and warned her not to disclose their affairs to anybody.
Pleading for forgiveness for what he did, the suspect explained that he lost control of himself when the victim embraced him on the day she visited his house to run an errand for him.
He said;
“I feel so bad for I what I did, the girl is the niece to my friend. We were living in the same compound before I parked to my current apartment.
“Later, my friend asked me to help him to look for a new apartment and I found one for him on my street. Since he parked to my street, we have been visiting each other and the girl has been running errands for me.
“Unfortunately, one day the girl came to my house and embraced me. That was how I started having feelings for her. The devil caused it.
“I know that I shouldn’t have done what I did; I had not done that kind of thing before, but the way she embraced me made me lose control of myself. I am pleading with everybody to forgive me.”
The suspect, who regretted that his wife left his house with his daughter because of the incident, vowed to take care of the victim until she puts to bed.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, who paraded the suspect at the Command’s headquarters in Umuahia, said Oleka was arrested by police operatives attached to the Central police station, Aba, following a complaint made by one Daniel Efuruezu, an uncle to the rape victim.
The CP added that the command had concluded investigation on the case and added that medical examination had revealed that the victim was two months pregnant.
Efuruezu, who said the suspect was his friend, pointed out that his neighbours had reported to him that he (suspect) had been visiting his house at odd hours of the day when he must have gone to work to hold closed-door discussions with his niece.
He added that when he confronted his friend on the issue, he neither denied nor accepted the accusation, but he nonchalantly asked him to bring the girl to his house if she was pregnant.
Eferezu said;
“When my neighbours told me of Oleka’s frequent visits to my house when I was away, I went to his house on two occasions to see him, but he refused to allow me see him, rather he sent a message through his wife that I should bring my niece to him if I said he impregnated her. That was why I reported the matter to the police.”

Mother Donates Womb to Daughter in India's First Ever Uterus Transplant (Photos)
The Indian surgical team were led by Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar
In the first surgery of its kind in India, a mother has donated her uterus to her 21-year-old daughter. The 43-year-old offered to undergo the procedure so that her daughter, who was born without a uterus, can experience childbirth.
The uterus, or womb, transplant took place in the city of Pune in southwest India, Thursday. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors at Pune's Galaxy Care Hospital and led by the hospital's medical director, Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar.
"The patients are fine. The surgery took nine and a half hours in total," he said. "The procedure is difficult because multiple large arteries are to be joined there, and veins that are small and short," said Puntambekar.
"It is technically very tough." The patient will have to wait a year before trying to become pregnant through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), giving her body enough time to heal and adjust to the new uterus.
According to Dr. Mats Brännström, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Sweden's University of Gothenburg, only six babies have ever been delivered from a uterus transplant - two from the same mother.
Brännström led the team that first successfully performed the procedure in 2014, when - after 11 unsuccessful attempts worldwide by their team and others - a healthy baby was born in Sweden. All five babies delivered since have been the result of surgeries performed by the Swedish team.
Doubts about childbirth
It remains to be seen whether India's first transplant will result in a birth. "We are responsible for the patient and fulfilling their dreams of becoming a mother, which was impossible for them until now," Puntambekar said, adding that he was aware of the "responsibility on his shoulders," but was feeling "relaxed and confident."
Successful uterus transplants are rare because of the complexity of the procedure involved: this was the first attempt at the pioneering surgery in India and only the 30th attempt in the world. Attempts have also taken place in the United States, Brazil, Sweden, China, Germany, Serbia, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, said Brännström.
New way to conceive
In a condition known as absolute uterine infertility, an absent, removed or diseased uterus can render a woman infertile. It affects one in 500 women of fertile age, or about 1.5 million women globally. Uterus transplants could be a way for women with absolute uterine infertility to conceive, rather than having to adopt or opt for surrogacy.
The process of a uterus transplant begins with IVF, where the eggs are removed from the patient, fertilized with sperm and then the resulting embryos are frozen. The uterus is then removed from the donor and transplanted into the recipient.
The embryos are implanted in the uterus usually about a year after the transplant takes place to ensure the body doesn't reject the new uterus. Finally, the patient is monitored for pregnancy.
Typically, the donated uterus would then be removed once the number of desired children have been born, so that the recipient is not in continuous need of immunosuppressive drugs, therefore minimizing their risk of long-term side-effects and their body's rejection of the new uterus.
The surgery could, in the future, be used not just on women with an absent or diseased uterus but also on transgender women who wish to give birth. However Brännström feels the procedure still needs more research before it can become more readily available.
"It will be at least 3-5 years before this will become a clinical procedure. We need more data from clinical trials."
